Dicky Bahto is a filmmaker based in San Francisco. As he’s visiting Vienna, he will be showing some new and older works on Super 8 and 16mm.
Artist Dicky Bahto will make his first appearance in Vienna with a retrospective program spanning over 20 years of work. The program will feature an excerpt from his recent three-hour long collaboration with musician Sarah Davachi, Music for a Bellowing Room, an exercise in resolution, inviting the audience to shift their concentration and perception through gradual changes in sound and image. The piece was originally commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and received its premiere performance in September 2023.
Accompanying this will be a range of work in Super 8, 16mm, and video, including a silent portrait of the musician Ashley Bellouin made on un-slit regular 8mm film (The Bellouin Sequence, 2009). His 16mm films Compositions were made as part of a body of work in film, still photography, and performance that collaboratively create chance compositions out of photographs he made of found arrangements of discarded furniture over several years.
The program will also include a digital version of a multiple projector Super 8 work.
