On this evening, two formats merge that have more in common than one might think: Super 8 and Karaoke.
Both offer a low-threshold entry point and endless creative possibilities. Both have their roots in amateur culture, have often been the starting point of great careers, should never be underestimated—and they simply refuse to die out.
Super 8 and Karaoke – a dream team of time-based arts in 3 minutes!
Our first edition at filmkoop wien revealed the potential of this format. Now we’re bringing it to the big screen of the beautiful Historic Hall at Metro Kinokulturhaus to celebrate dok.at’s 25th birthday.
How does it work?
We screen a Super 8 film—either one you bring yourself or one by someone else—and a Karaoke song (from YouTube) is performed to it. Whether you decide spontaneously on-site or plan it in advance: you choose which song fits which film. The collective pondering and selecting are part of the fun! The performer stands in front of the screen while the film is running. Two external monitors—one for the singer and one for the audience—display the lyrics.
Participation is highly encouraged: group singing makes everything even more fun!
Bring your Super 8 films!
Whether it’s a documentary classic, an artistic experiment, the result of your last workshop, your very first camera test, a festival hit, your grandma’s holiday footage, or a mysterious flea market find – we’ll play everything you bring.
Yes, you can also bring digital versions, although of course, analog projection is the preferred option!
And if you don’t have a Super 8 film but love Karaoke – you’re just as welcome!
We have plenty of films in reserve!
